This
Bergen institution, now in several locations, is great for
a quick bite. Try skillingsbolle or skolebrød, a
sweet roll with custard and coconut icing - both are scrumptious.
For something less sweet, this bakery serves freshly baked
wheat rolls with Norwegian hvit ost (white cheese) and cucumber.

What
began as a beer hall in 1894 is now more of a pub, with
hearty homemade food at reasonable prices. The salted mutton
with mashed potato and turnips has been served for more
than a century; fried halibut cooked in cream or butter
sauce, dried codfish, and the usual open-face sandwiches
are always on the menu. No credit cards.

It's
always full, upstairs and down. The menu's the same in both
places, but only the first floor is authentically old. Poached
halibut served with boiled potatoes and cucumber salad,
a traditional favorite, is the specialty, but there's also
sautéed ocean catfish with mushrooms and shrimp,
and grilled lamb fillet. AE, DC, MC, V.

This
classic Norwegian restaurant near Bryggen has four small
rooms that make for a snug, intimate atmosphere. Some of
the timber interior dates from the 18th century. The seven-course
menu emphasizes seafood, although the venison and reindeer
are excellent. Traditional Norwegian desserts such as cloudberries
and cream are irresistible. AE, DC, MC, V. Closed Sun.

Contemporary
Although
the decor seems a bit out of kilter - modern art matched
with lace doilies and boardroom chairs - the food in this
restaurant is always good. This is a good place to splurge
on the four-course meal that's offered. Jacket and tie.

With
its five tables and red-and-white check tablecloths, this

The
name means "two cooks," and that's what there
are. Ranked among Bergen's best restaurants by many, this
spot is on Bryggen, in a 300-year-old building complete
with crooked floors and slanted moldings. Try the roasted
reindeer or the marinated salmon. Desserts use local fruit.
Reservations essential. AE, DC, MC, V. Closed Sun. No lunch.
